In Memorium
Caroline Lewis Kardell

1929-2007

Caroline Lewis Kardell served as the Historian General of the General Society of Mayflower Descendants, 1987-2002,

While serving as Historian General, Caroline was responsible for many initiatives and innovations, including expansion of the Society library.

She had two Doty lines and was a member of our Society for many years, very interested in and supportive of attending meetings and ceremonies.  At the time of her death, she was serving on our board as an Assistant.

A memorial service for Faith Clark Doty Phillips, wife of Edward Doty, was held at the First Congregational Church in Marshfield, MA on May 6, 1989, in which Caroline took part.  The service was followed by a ceremony at the Winslow Cemetery in Marshfield dedicating a beautiful stone marker in Faith's memory.

In 1992, Caroline participated in a Heritage Links tour to England.  She attended  the plaque ceremony honoring Edward Doty on October 3, 1992 at the Pilgrim Monument in Southampton.  This was the last plaque to be placed there.

Caroline, in her later years, was very active in the Mayflower Society's DNA project.  She was also involved in leading positions of many genealogical associations.  She was the first recipient (January 16, 1999) of the Pennsylvania Society's Award for Distinguished Scholarship.

Caroline will be remembered as a great Historian General, always willing to share her vast knowledge and was a mentor to many.  She was a tactful, kind and gracious person who will be missed by all who knew her.

At the present time, the Doty Society is working on an appropriate memorial in her memory to be announced at a later date.

Caroline died on December 13, 2007  A memorial service was held on December 19 at the First Parish Church, Plymouth, MA
