Welcome to the Doty-Doten Y-DNA
Surname Project established in the summer of 2006 by the Pilgrim Edward
Doty Society. Our purposes in establishing the Project were:
(1) to
provide a reliable database of likely DNA signatures of the Pilgrim
Edward Doty and his sons against which anyone could confidently compare
their DNA signature,
(2)
to provide a facility that would help us identify different branches of
the Doty family, and
(3) to increase our chances of discovering the
true origins of our Pilgrim Ancestor.
Through January 1st, 2008, 45 individuals had joined
our Y-DNA Project. Of these, 37 have submitted samples of
their DNA to Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) and received their full 37-marker
test results. Complete test results are pending for the remaining 8
participants.
Three reports are included here entitled
Y-DNA Test Results,
Analysis of Results - Our Doty-Doten Heritage, and
Analysis of Results – Our Deep Ancestral Roots.
These reports will be revised as new test results and other relevant information become available.
As noted in our last update, we have a relatively new participant whose
current surname is not Doty, but whose test results clearly indicate
that it once was. This person believes that a non-paternal event may
have occurred in his family during the later part of the 18th or early
part of the 19th Century in or around Poughkeepsie, NY. If you have
information on Doty families that lived in this area at this time, we
would encourage you to contact our DNA
Project Administrator.
In addition, we continue to encourage descendants of Dr. Ezra Doty and
his first wife Damaris Hamlin and his second wife Rebecca North Lewis to
contact our Project Administrator. These families lived in and around
Sharon, CT and Mifflintown, PA during the later part of the 18th and the
early part of the 19th Century.
If you are a male with the surname of Doty or one of its variants, or if you are a male
with a surname other than Doty but believe that you may have a direct
male line back to Doty roots, we
would encourage you to join our Project by submitting a sample of your
DNA to Family Tree DNA, the testing company with which we work. If you
are a female and have a close male relative (brother, father, cousin or
uncle) with the surname of Doty or one of its variants, we would invite
you to join our Project as well by asking your close relative to submit
a sample of his DNA for testing. By having your DNA or that of a close male relative
tested and included in our database, you can learn a good deal about
your likely paternal heritage, you can help others learn about theirs,
and you can help us all to learn a great deal more than we currently
know about the Pilgrim Edward Doty.
To Participate in our Doty-Doten Y-DNA Project:
• Go to the
Doty-Doten project on the Family Tree DNA Website.
• Scroll down the page to the order form, fill it out and click on
“Submit”. That’s all there is to it. You will receive a test kit in the
mail within a few days.

Doty Doughty DNA Project
is to locate our ancestors back to the 16th century, and to share
information and link as many Doty Doughty’s and all known variations of
